Empowering youths through recycling and waste collection in Siavonga

In May 2021 Dr. Alexander M. Greiling, Aller Aqua’s Research Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, and Mwansa Sishemo, founder and director of the Maluwa Foundation, reached an agreement to support the Maluwa Foundation’s youth-empowering recycling project in Siavonga.

The project aim was to collect 10 tons of non-organic waste in the Siavonga District and from the shores of Lake Kariba. The waste would be removed from nature and instead used to power the furnaces of an industrial partner in Zambia, and thus decrease their reliance on fossil fuels.

Aller Aqua Zambia participated in the project by sorting a total of 1100kg production waste following Maluwa Foundation guidelines. This initiative had dedicated support from the youths of Siavonga, who volunteered to contribute to the future of their community.

The Maluwa Foundation is a youth learning center that aims to improve and support the communities in Zambia. The Foundation strives to reduce inequality and poverty and is committed to building a strong society.
